Firsts Miss Out in Cup Thriller

Aimie CattellAfter a 0-1 win on the South Coast at Chichester Leicester City Ladies next game in the League Cup was against a familiar side in the form of Radcliffe Olympic.
For the first half the away team dominated, although City worked hard two scrappy goals saw them 0-2 down at the break.
It was a more enthusiastic Leicester City Ladies than came out second half with a change of formation and took the game to the visitors. Chances came early for the home side but it took until the hour for Gemma Ball to pull a goal back. Straight after Leicester City Ladies shot themselves in the foot by conceding a penalty. Soon they regrouped and really started to show quality on the ball, first Gemma Ball struck again this time through a penalty of our own and Sarah Burbidge pulled back a remarkable turn around with a fine strike from the edge of the box.
City were a different team and made it a real cup tie and extra time was needed to separate the teams. Unfortunately it was the away sides day when a stunning free kick gave them back the lead and for all City’s efforts a scrappy fifth made the game safe.
Overall a very good cup tie for both sides Leicester City Ladies manager Matt Cook commented “People have to remember the squad is going through a big transition and I couldn’t be happier today. Sad to go out of course but today we had five of last years development team in the side which is tremendous and combined with our experience players we showed superb attitude and some wonderful play. In fact second half was some of the best football we have played for a while strangely. We need to start games with more belief when the squad is tested but a wonderful reaction and a wonderful cup tie.”
