Firsts Miss Out in Cup Thriller

Aimie CattellAfter a 0-1 win on the South Coast at Chichester Leicester City Ladies next game in the League Cup was against a familiar side in the form of Radcliffe Olympic.
For the first half the away team dominated, although City worked hard two scrappy goals saw them 0-2 down at the break.
It was a more enthusiastic Leicester City Ladies than came out second half with a change of formation and took the game to the visitors. Chances came early for the home side but it took until the hour for Gemma Ball to pull a goal back. Straight after Leicester City Ladies shot themselves in the foot by conceding a penalty. Soon they regrouped and really started to show quality on the ball, first Gemma Ball struck again this time through a penalty of our own and Sarah Burbidge pulled back a remarkable turn around with a fine strike from the edge of the box.
City were a different team and made it a real cup tie and extra time was needed to separate the teams. Unfortunately it was the away sides day when a stunning free kick gave them back the lead and for all City’s efforts a scrappy fifth made the game safe.
Overall a very good cup tie for both sides Leicester City Ladies manager Matt Cook commented “People have to remember the squad is going through a big transition and I couldn’t be happier today. Sad to go out of course but today we had five of last years development team in the side which is tremendous and combined with our experience players we showed superb attitude and some wonderful play. In fact second half was some of the best football we have played for a while strangely. We need to start games with more belief when the squad is tested but a wonderful reaction and a wonderful cup tie.”

Firsts Throught to Quarters

Amanda WhalleyAfter lots of postponements finally this tie was played and on a 3G surface but Leicester City Ladies adapted well and clinched a fine away win.
On her return from injury Amanda Whalley gave Leicester City Ladies the lead with a fine goal. It required a stunning save from Leicester keeper Cattell to keep it 0-1 at the interval.
Chichester City put in a fine display in a good cup tie but City were resilient and earned a fine win, a fifth clean sheet in seven games and a passage through to this years League Cup Plate Quarter Finals on Sunday at home to Radcliffe Olympic.

Diamonds Out Battle Rovers

Leicester City Ladies Diamonds beat a previously unbeaten Oadby & Wigston Rovers side 5-1 with a battling and determined display to reach the Semi Finals of the County Cup.
The first half was very competitive with both teams having decent chances. The best chance fell to Oadby & Wigston Rovers though but Jocelyn was up to the challenge and saved a penalty to keep the score line 0-0 at the break.

The 2nd half was different though as Leicester City Ladies took total control and Rovers could not get to grip with the determination and battling qualities of the Leicester girls with the Leicester midfield outplaying and out battling their Rovers opponents. D’shayney opened the scoring with a superb header from a corner and Tiarna soon made it 2-0 with a superb 25 yard finish. D’shayney and Tiarna both added another goal each and Leicester were in total command with a 4-0 lead. To their credit Oadby & Wigston Rovers got a consolation goal to make it 4-1 but then a 50 yard run and finish from Lauren put the icing on the cake to make it 5-1.
This was a superb battling 5-1 win and the girls should be proud of themselves as they out fought a very good Oadby & Wigston Rovers side and made them look 2nd best all 2nd half.

Battling Display

Leicester City Ladies Diamonds beat Harborough Town 3-0 with a battling display to record their 8th win out of eight and stay top of the League.
The first half was very competitive with both teams putting in a good shift but no team could get a stranglehold of the game and it was deservedly level at half time.

The 2nd half was also a very competitive half. The Diamonds began to show a bit more quality and tested the Harborough keeper on numerous occasions but she kept Town in the game with some excellent saves. However ten minutes into the second half Olivia C, who was having her best game of the season, put them in the lead with a close range shot and the Diamonds were on their way. Leicester City Ladies Diamonds kept on creating chances and it was no surprise when Olivia C made it 2-0 with her 2nd of the game. D’shayney was having one of those days where every time she looked like scoring the keeper would make a good save or defender a last gasp challenge so the game was not won. However Laura managed to finally put the game to bed with a deflected shot that gave Diamonds a deserved 3-0 win.

Extra Time Victory

Leicester City Ladies kept up there good form with a hard fought win against inform Burton Park. The home side haven’t lost a competitive league games in two years and are coming through the ranks.
Leicester City Ladies showed the better quality but Burton Park more than played their part in this cup tie. It was a youthful Leicester side with a complete new back four that started the brighter and had a good hold on the first half. Leicester City Ladies kept up their good play in the second half but just couldn’t find the net. The home side had one chance through a scramble in the penalty box but the game went to extra time.
Soon City made their quality count with a fine move between Brant, Preston and Hillier, who had caused Burton Park problems all day finally fell at Kilby’s feet who finished superbly into the top corner. Leicester City Ladies then stood strong and gained a FA Cup victory and are through to the next round.
Leicester City Ladies manager Matt Cook commented after the match “Overall these cup ties are never easy and with a big crowd behind them it was a tough day. I thought we were far better however but struggled to break through. When we did it was a fine goal, its a shame we could wrap it up earlier but all in all a good cup tie and solid passage through to round two.”

Diamonds Win Close Encounter

Leicester City Ladies Diamonds beat their fellow sister team Leicester City Ladies 1-0 in a closely fought contest. The first half was very competitive with both teams huffing and puffing but with not a lot of chances being created. The one good chance fell to the Diamonds when Lauren went on a surging run, rounding the keeper and it looked a certain goal but was superbly cleared off the line by a defender. Safe handling by the Leicester Ladies keeper kept any Diamonds attacks at bay.

The 2nd half was also a very competitive half. The Diamonds began to show a bit more urgency and Jenna put them in the lead with a close range shot. Diamonds had a few more chances with Lauren hitting the bar and Laura having a shot cleared off the line. For all their pressure Diamonds couldn’t put the game to bed and a good move by Leicester Ladies saw a good shot saved by Jocelyn. The game ended in a 1-0 win to the Diamonds and credit must go to both sides for playing a competitive game in the right spirit. Both teams seem to be going in the right direction.
