Diamonds Win in Tough Conditions

Leicester City Ladies Diamonds got back to winning ways with a 4-2 victory over Loughborough Foxes in some atrocious windy and rainy conditions that both sides did well to play and produce some good football in. Diamonds started well and despite the conditions knocked the ball around as well as they could. However against the run of play Loughborough Foxes took the lead with a superb shot that Jocelyn could do nothing about. The Diamonds’ heads didn’t go down though and a superb flowing move was finished off with a sweet shot by D’shayney to draw the sides level. Another flowing move followed 5 minutes later and a superb cross by Olivia C was expertly finished by Molly. At this stage there was only one team in it and D’shayney had 3 good chances to stretch the lead but she either put them wide or hit the post. These misses proved to be costly as Loughborough equalised with another good finish to undeservedly go in level at half time 2-2.

The 2nd half started and the conditions were a little bit better. The Diamonds were again quick out of the blocks and it seemed only a matter of time before they scored again. After hitting the post another 2 times Tiarna settled the nerves with a superb 25 yard finish that flew into the net. With only a 1 goal advantage the game still wasn’t won but the Diamonds continued to spurn chances. They hit the post another 2 times, to make it 6 times the post was hit in total in the match, and you felt it wasn’t going to be their day and they would get caught with a sucker punch equaliser. However the game was put to bed when Lauren chipped the keeper to make it 4-2 and finally we could relax ! Overall the girls put in a very commanding performance in difficult conditions and can now look forward to the County Cup Final on April 1st with confidence.

Leicester Full Value for Away Point

Leicester City Ladies take a well earned point home after battling hard away to Leafield Athletic. The warm weather wasn’t enough to improve the pitch condition which affected much of both sides tactics going into the game, however it was the away side that started the brightest with chances for Khe and Chiv before Brant forces a big save from Leafields keeper. The home side had chances too, Leicester City Ladies needed keeper Catt to be brave at the feet of the striker on two occasions getting caught in the process.
The second half was much the same with the ball going end to end and both teams showing real desire and commitment to their cause. It was Leicester City Ladies who had the best chance of the second half as a mix up at the back put Abbie through who unfortunately couldn’t keep her effort from 20 yards under the bar. Plenty of positives to take into the next game. Full Time 0-0.
“Player of the match is hard to pick,” quoted first team coach Nathan Curtis “Stacey Hills was brilliant today, Khe Obeyisimi had a very very good game to but I have to agree with Sue Foulkes and give it captain Ez Kilby for being a proper leader today.”

Diamonds Held In Tough Game

Leicester City Ladies Diamonds suffered a setback in their title race challenge when they were held to a 1-1 draw against a well organised and committed Bedworth Gems who deservedly shared the spoils. The match was a very even contest throughout and from the off the Diamonds knew they were in for a tough game. The Gems were very organised and gave the Diamonds no room to play and it was always heading for a low scoring tight game. After a superb Shania shot was pushed round the post for a corner by a superb save from the keeper the Diamonds took the lead. Olivia D put a pinpoint corner into the box for Lauren to powerfully head home to put the Diamonds 1 up. After this the Diamonds had a few half chances that were either missed or saved by the keeper. However the Gems also had their chances and their lone striker was always a threat and Jocelyn had to be at her best to save a few dangerous efforts. The Gems equalised with a long range shot that managed to be too high to be pushed over the bar and the Diamonds knew they were in for a game. Just before half time a slick passing move by the Diamonds sent Lauren racing in but her shot was again superbly saved by the keeper so the teams went in at half time level.

The 2nd half again proved to be a even contest although the Diamonds got stronger towards the end of the half. The Diamonds had very few clear cut chances and the ones they did have were dealt with by the defence or keeper. With ten minutes to go it looked as if the Diamonds would at last snatch it when a mazy run by Lauren saw her beat four players but her powerful shot went wide and with it the victory that the Diamonds needed was gone.
This was a good game of football that was played in the right spirit by the both sets of girls and credit must go to Bedworth Gems who gave it their all and were a tough nut to crack.

Diamonds Progress To Semi-Finals Of League Cup

Leicester City Ladies Diamonds overcame a very strong Oadby Owls side to progress to the semi finals of the League Cup with a narrow 3-2 victory. The two sides have now met four times this season including a friendly and the sides are very evenly matched and there is never any more than one goal in a game. The County Cup game on April 1st looks sure to be a cracker as well.
The game started off at a blistering pace with both sides committing players forward. Oadby Owls had the edge though and good defending and goalkeeping was keeping their attackers at bay. That said the Diamonds still looked dangerous going forward and took the lead in the 20th minute when a good pass by Laura was flicked home by Olivia C. However the lead lasted less than a minute as Oadby Owls equalised when there winger showed good strength and a good finish to level things up. The rest of the half was played with superb commitment from both sides and they went in at half time level with Oadby Owls shading the half.

The 2nd half again proved to be a battle and both sides were full of desire to clinch the win. It was however the Diamonds who were looking the stronger and only the post denied them taking the lead. However it was Oadby Owls who took the lead to make it 2-1 with an excellent strike from their other winger that Jocelyn could do nothing about. This rocked the Diamonds but one thing they never do is give up. They battled and scrapped and finally got their reward when a goalmouth scramble was finally put in by Jenna to draw the Diamonds level at 2-2. With both sides looking for a winner it looked like extra time and penalties might be the only thing that could split the sides. However the Diamonds are renowned in the League for never giving up and they are the last 10 minutes specialists when it comes to getting late goals! This was again proved when a through ball found D’shayney clean through with a minute to play. D’shayney calmly took the ball in her stride and skilfully slid the ball into the net to cap a superb performance from the Diamonds. It was fitting that D’shayney got the winner as she was the Diamonds’ best player on the day.
Overall a very inspiring and pleasing display from the girls and Oadby must be fed up with the last minute goals we have scored against them this season! Well done to both sets of players for a superb advert for girls’ football.

Ladies Fight Back

IMG_9153In poor conditions Leicester City Ladies secured a vital three points at home to FC Reedswood. The game was moved to Aylestone Park due to poor pitch conditions at Reedswood and Leicester City Ladies will now travel in April.
The first half was even but Reedswood were unlucky not to be in front as Leicester City Ladies goalkeeper Cattell pulled off two superb saves. City had chances of their own as good link up play between Preston, Hillier, Brant and Chivers created good opportunities.
The Second half was much of the same but it was Reedswood who took the lead from a rebounded corner. Leicester City Ladies regrouped as conditions got worse and captain Erica Kilby slotted home with ten minutes to go to level the game. Leicester showed determination and pushed on for the win creating several chances and the goal came as Preston stole in to volley home at the back post to seal a vital win late in the game.
Leicester City Ladies manager Matt Cook commented “I thought we deserved it, others would disagree. Catt of course pulled off two amazing saves at crucial times but that’s her job as Beckys is to score as a striker who got the winner so I don’t understand why our goalkeeper making key saves means we do not deserve it? She played her fantastic part as did 13 others, it was a great team effort. I thought we put everything into the game, we rolled up our sleeves when the rain got heavier and over 90 minutes it was deserved.”

Diamonds Bounce Back In The Cup

Leicester City Ladies Diamonds U15’s bounced back from their 1st defeat of the season last week with a comfortable 2-0 win in the League Cup away to Harborough Town. Harborough Town once again proved to be tough opponents but the Diamonds were in determined mood after last week and their passion and commitment returned. Diamonds opened the scoring with a lob from Molly and doubled their lead with a goal from Lauren to take a 2-0 lead in the first 15 minutes and set them on their way. With the Harborough keeper in inspired form the Diamonds who were dominant throughout the 1st half were kept at bay from opening up a 5 or 6 goal lead at half time and the 2-0 margin didn’t do them justice.
Half Time: Harborough Town 0 Leicester City Ladies Diamonds 2
The 2nd half was a bit more of an even contest and Harborough were more of a threat. However it was the Diamonds who once again had the better chances and but for the excellent performance of the Harborough keeper the score would have been a lot more convincing. Overall a very good display from the Diamonds and a quarter final against Oadby Owls awaits.
