Season Review

The Diamonds have had a very good season finishing 2nd in the League to a very strong Oadby & Wigston Rovers side. They also finished runners up in the County Cup after losing 3-1 to Oadby Owls in extra time having beaten Oadby & Wigston Rovers 5-1 and Asfordby 8-0 on the way to the Final. They also got knocked out in the Semi Final of the League Cup after losing on penalties 3-2 after drawing the game 2-2 to Oadby & Wigston Rovers despite being the better side on the day. They had beaten Harborough Town 2-0 and Oadby Owls 3-2 on the way to the Final. In my opinion the girls deserved to win a trophy this season for their efforts but football isn’t always fair and April has proved to be a disappointing month in the final run of fixtures. However credit must go to 2 strong sides in Oadby & Wigston Rovers & Oadby Owls who beat them in the games that mattered. The girls will now look forward to their end of season tour to Butlins in Bognor.

Firsts Bounce Back

Preston-ReedswoodLeicester City Ladies aimed to bounce back after a disappointing defeat to Leafield with an away trip to FC Reedswood. The away side had a mixed start with our forward play looking bright, but our defence starting off shaky. Leicester City Ladies who struck first when Kay Hillier was brought down in the box by the keeper, the ref played advantage perfectly and new signing Kim Yates reacted fastest to claim her first competitive goal for the club. The lead did not last long however after numerous cheap free kicks FC Reedswood found the back of the net from long range. Becky Preston then restored the lead picking up the ball from Kay Hillier, running past two players and hammering one in from twenty five yards out. The lead was almost taken straight away again when Sarah Burbidge brought a player down in the box leaving the referee with no choice but to award a penalty and a yellow card for the offence. Fortunately for Leicester City Ladies the penalty went high over the bar and the half time score was 1-2.
The second half started similar to the 1st with both sides trying to play attractive football, the 70th minute came and a late tackle on keeper Catt triggered a scuffle between Sarah and the Reedswood number 10, the referee gave Sarah her second yellow and the Reedswood number 10 received a booking for the tackle and talked her way to a second yellow leaving both teams down to ten players. Leicester City Ladies came to life in the last fifteen minutes and finished the stronger side with numerous chances for the front three of Kay Hillier, Khe and Kim which were all narrowly missing the target leaving the full time score 1-2.
Leicester City Ladies Player of the Match Becky Preston. Everybody gave there all in this match, Kay Hillier was also a big shout for player of the match with two assists.

Diamonds Lose Last League Game

Leicester City Ladies Diamonds finished off their League campaign with a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Champions Oadby & Wigston Rovers. Unlike the previous week when the Diamonds were the better team this week they didn’t have the same zest abut them. Oadby & Wigston Rovers opened the scoring early on and then scored two more times to take an unassailable lead of 3-0 into half time.

The Diamonds showed a bit more endeavour in the 2nd half but found the superb Oadby & Wigston Rovers goalkeeper in fine form and she stopped everything that was thrown at her. It ended 3-0 to the hosts at Full Time.

Diamonds Suffer Penalty Agony

Leicester City Ladies Diamonds unluckily lost their League Cup Semi – Final 3-2 on penalties after drawing 2-2 with Champions Oadby & Wigston Rovers. Despite dominating for large periods of the game and having the lion’s share of possession they went out of the Cup on penalties. This was the hardest defeat of the season to take as the girls put in so much effort and deserved to reach the Final on the day.
The first half started in the worst way possible for the Diamonds when Lucy sliced a corner into her own net in the 2nd minute to put the Diamonds on the back foot. Both sides sparred with each other for most of the 1st half and there were no clear cut chances with both sets of girls giving their all. The Diamonds just about shaded the 1st half on possession and were looking the stronger team but it was Rovers who went in at Half Time with a 1-0 lead.

The 2nd half was a bit more of an entertaining half with chances at both ends. Again the Diamonds were the stronger team and looked the most likely to score. However a long range free kick from Oadby & Wigston Rovers caught Jocelyn out and Rovers took a 2-0 lead which really didn’t reflect the game. However the Diamonds girls are full of character and never give up. Changing to a 3-5-2 formation the Diamonds pegged Rovers’ back into their own half for much of the 2nd half. The Diamonds scored a superb goal from Molly who blasted in a 20 yarder to pull a goal back for the Diamonds with 15 minutes to go. It was all Diamonds now and Oadby were defending resolutely. The Diamonds got their reward 5 minutes from time when a shot by Shania deceived the keeper and levelled the score at 2-2. There only looked one winner now but Rovers managed to keep the score to 2-2 at Full Time.

There was then a pointless 5 minutes each way of extra time (surely should be 10 minutes each way like the County Cup) that didn’t produce anything of note and so to the dreaded penalty shoot out. The Diamonds scored through Lauren and Molly but Olivia C, Olivia D and Tiarna did not and Rovers held their nerve and won the penalty shoot out 3-2.
On the day the girls might have lost on penalties but I just want to say how proud the Joint Managers are with their never say die attitude and display on the day that deserved a win. Sometimes football can be cruel but the girls took it on the chin. Fair play to Oadby & Wigston Rovers as they held their nerve in the penalty shoot out.

Diamonds Win In Entertaining Game

Leicester City Ladies Diamonds won an entertaining game 7-1 against their sister side. The Diamonds were on the front foot from the start and enjoyed lots of possession. However they found Lucy, the opposition goalkeeper, in fine form and she produced save after save, especially from D’shayney, to keep the Diamonds at bay. The Diamonds opened the scoring in the 15th minute through a superb 20 yard shot from Tiarna that gave the keeper no chance. After 20 minutes Olivia D turned poacher as she turned a goal ward bound shot into the net to make the score 2-0. The Diamonds rounded off the half with a neat lob finish by Lauren to make it 3-0 before the break.

The 2nd half was again an entertaining half and both teams were giving it their all. The Diamonds made it 4-0 with a smart finish from Laura on 50 minutes. However the goal of the game came from the opposition when Rebecca scored a lovely 25 yard left foot shot that gave Jocelyn no chance in goal to make it 4-1. The Diamonds went 5-1 up on 70 minutes with a superb free kick from 25 yards from Lauren that flew into the net. D’shayney added 2 further goals in the last 10 minutes to leave the score 7-1. This was a very entertaining game played in a good spirit by both sides. Hopefully both sides can progress in their semi-final games on Sunday April 19th.

Diamonds Draw In Disappointing Display

Leicester City Ladies Diamonds produced a disappointing display in a 1-1 draw with Bedworth Eagles Girls although the dreadful windy conditions were a factor. The Diamonds never really got into their stride in the 1st half and although created a few chances they were wayward in their shooting. That said they still took the lead with a smart finish from Jenna but even though they had the wind in their favour they couldn’t add to their goal tally.

The 2nd half produced an improved display from the Diamonds and even though they were playing against the wind they produced some good chances and D’shayney went close with a lovely chip that drifted wide of the goal. However Bedworth more than matched them in the 2nd half and also had their opportunities. Bedworth equalised with ten minutes to go when the Diamonds did not defend a corner very well and Bedworth scored with a well taken shot. The game was up for grabs now and both sides pushed forward but to there was no end product. The Diamonds nearly snatched it at the death after a superb run and cross from Olivia D was narrowly headed wide by Olivia C. All in all a draw was a fair result and the Diamonds look destined to finish 2nd in the League now unless a miracle happens.

Firsts Win Tight Encounter

Leicester City Ladies followed up their away point to Leafield with another good away performance and a clean sheet as well.
City took a well deserved lead half through the first half when a Brant cross was headed in superbly by skipper Kilby.
Second half was different as Solihull pushed Leicester City Ladies back and saw many chances come and go. With three subs needed through injury City fought all the way to the end and were unlucky not to sneak a second on the final whistle.
Leicester City Ladies manager Matt Cook commented “This was a frustrating game but in terms of effort with the squad pushed to its limits them it was an A* performance. Solihull I’m sure feel unlucky to. I had to to make so many changes, striker Chiv played central midfield, Kay went to full back to name just a couple so well done for keeping together girls and picking up three points.”

Diamonds Suffer Extra Time Loss In County Cup Final

Diamonds CountyCupFinal2015Leicester City Ladies Diamonds were beaten 3-1 in extra time by a determined and competitive Oadby Owls’ side who gave everything for their Manager to win the County Cup. The game was a great advert for girls football and was played at a terrific pace and with some great football and the game ebbed and flowed throughout. On the night no side deserved to win or lose but there has to be a winner and Oadby Owls proved the stronger and better finishers in extra time to gain their win and fair play to them.
The first half mainly belonged to the Diamonds but Oadby were always threatening on the break. The Diamonds created numerous half chances with both Lauren and Shania coming close but they couldn’t breach the Owls defence and goalkeeper who had a superb game. Both sides were passing the ball well and the quality shown by both sides was a joy to watch. With half time approaching the Diamonds took the lead when Olivia D superbly drove the ball home to give the Diamonds a 1-0 lead at half time.

At half time the Diamonds were warned that Oadby Owls were not finished and so it proved. Again the play was pretty even and the determination and skill shown by both teams was superb and must have been a pleasure to watch for the neutral. With 20 minutes left Oadby Owls’ equalised with a superb effort from their striker and it was game on. Again both sides battled and both had chances to win the game in normal time. The best chance fell to D’shayney a minute from time but her header came back off the bar and the sides were level at full time.
Full Time Leicester City Ladies Diamonds 1 Oadby Owls 1
This led to 10 minutes extra time each way. There were some tired legs on both teams with players going down with cramp at various intervals. The quality was still in the game but the chances were getting less. That said once again the Oadby Owls’ striker scored a superb strike to give Oadby the lead for the first time. The 1st half of extra time ended with Oadby winning 2-1. In the 2nd half of extra time it didn’t matter what the Diamonds threw at Oadby as it was repelled. With a minute to go their striker completed her hat trick with another superb strike to finally put the game to bed with a 3-1 victory.
As much as it was a disappointment for the Diamonds to lose the Final as it was an even affair credit must go to Oadby Owls. Their Management and players fully deserve their success as they play the game in the right way and both sets of players were a credit to their clubs. Hopefully the Diamonds will bounce back and win something this season as that is what their players deserve for such a good season they have had.
